SEED BOXES FILLED AT CKSS

Several species of tree seed were planted in four newly constructed outdoor protected seed beds at CKSS.

Species include:

Eastern Red Cedar
Bladdernut
Button bush
Red Oak
Sassafrass
Tulip Tree
American Sycamore

We just have to play the waiting game now and maintain moisture and weed control. Good luck on exams students and I'll see you in the spring.

About mid March we'll be getting back in the greenhouse to plant the bulk of our seed collected this fall.

Seeds that float are typically bad due to an insect, known as the weevil, who lays its eggs inside a maturing seed, the larval stage feeds off of the fleshy part of the seed creating an air pocket.

CKSS Environmental Club participant scarifies seeds

Seed scarification is a natural process to break down a hard seed coat to allow germination. In nature, after an animal ingests a seed, stomach acids work to break down the seed coat. Without this process, some seeds are unable to absob water necessary to begin growing.

Hard Working Crew

Walnuts were a little slimy

Easy husking when they're soft.

Growing Medium

Leaves were placed in the bottom of the seed bed. In a wheel barrow, we mixed peat, sand, and topsoil, then placed it directly on top of the leaves.

Red Cedar Maceration

Red Cedar has germination inhibiting chemicals in the fruit. By macerating the fruit off the seed we increase germination rates. In nature, animals eat the purple berries and they are passed through the digestive system. The maceration technique simulates this.

American Sycamore

Mr. Williams shows students how wind dispersed seeds just need to be broadcast on the soil surface and tamped down for good soil to seed contact.

Ridgetown District Highschool

At Ridgetown, the students removed a strip of sod behind their soccer field about 50m long and 0.5m wide. The soil was sand, and made the planting effortless. 300 trees were installed in the line out trench and watered. The janitor and summer students have volunteered to care for the trees during the hottest periods of the year.

Perfect soil moisture, and density. These guys really caught on to proper germination conditions in the styro-block trays. Filled loosely and leveled off, then knocked down twice and plant!

The Cut Test

Ensuring quality, viability, and saving time by doing a simple cut test.

Pests

This acorn weevil is the main cause of acorn failure. They eat the seed embryo creating an air cavity causing the acorn to float in water.

Kentucky Coffee Tree

A scarification demonstration was performed with a pair of vice grips and a file. The seed coat was filed off just enough to expose the embryo to allow for moisture uptake. Here the scarified seeds are soaking for 24hrs.

Float Testing

Float testing is one of the major quality tests to ensure viability. Insect damage from acorn weevils creates air pockets where the seed embryo should be causing the acorn to float.

Soil Density and Moisture

Two key elements in germination. Soil should be knocked down a few times to compress the soil just enough to simulate nature. Moisture levels should be moist but not soaking.

~ two seeds per cell for optimum germination rates. Later, the weak ones will be pruned out.

Oak Float Test

~ seeds that sink are viable. seeds that float are generally damaged and will not germinate.
