The CKSS Environmental Club participated in a tallgrass prairie seed collection event at Turin Paw Paw on September 25th, 2012. 11 student volunteers and 3 teachers learned how to identify and collect native prairie species such species as Giant Sunflower, Big Bluestem, and Grey-headed Coneflower. They also happened to stumble across a patch of Desmodium which was later discovered covering their clothing.
Turin Paw Paw, a 40 hectatre parcel connecting Skunk's Misery to Clear Creek Forest, was donated in 2005 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada by Jim and Georgina Sheldon. The parcel, which is comprised of upland forest, grassland, and wetlands, is a great area for students to learn about and experience nature. The cold-frame boxes are covered in leaf litter to help insulate the seeds from the cold throughout the winter and mimic a natural environment
