We have several great groups assisting with fall tasks this year.
On November 8th, Dan Ryan's Life Skills class from Chatham-Kent Secondary School joined me at the municipal greenhouse to assist in re-potting seedlings in need of a larger space to grow. The 8 students who participated did a great job and accomplished re-potting a large portion of the trees in need.
Michelle Beatty's class at Ridgetown High School participated in an introductory lesson about tree importance, and a native tallgrass prairie seed collection event at Turin Paw Paw Woods on November 8th and 9th. The group of 12 students collected Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Mountain Mint, Tick-trefoil, and Black-eyed Susans.
Grade 2 and 3 students from Riverview Central School participated in a tallgrass prairie seed collection event at Branton Cundick Park on November 28th. The classes, led by teachers Nicole Hooper and Anne Hazzard, enjoyed learning about prairie habitats, different types of seed, and collection methods. The students, joined by parent volunteers collected species including Indian grass, Grey-headed coneflower, and wild bergamot.
Thank you to all of our volunteers, school groups, and funding partners who participated and supported the Community Trees Initiative in the 2012. With your help, we have been able to restore and educated many groups throughout the Lower Thames Valley Watershed and beyond. Funding for this program in 2012 was provided by Union Gas, a Spectra Energy Company, and EcoAction Environment Canada.
